The Vantaa City Museum's collections and cultural environment materials are organized with the help of the Profium Sense -software's semantic technology.
Vantaa City Museum has around 20 000 items in its collection and the photographic archive contains 80 000 images about the development of Vantaa since the end of 1800. Vantaa has a long history, because there were inhabitants already during the Stone Ages. The earliest finds of settlement date back over 9000 years. Today, the city has a population of around 220 000. The Vantaa City Museum is an expert in Vantaa's cultural heritage and cultural environment. Supplied by Profium, the collection management system of the Vantaa City Museum, is nicknamed Kirsti. Profium Sense™ utilizes semantic web techniques to improve searches using concepts from the KOKO ontology. Profium's collection management system includes several interfaces that allow connections with other systems. The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) interface enables data to be raked into, for example, the Finna.fi search service. Profium's system automatically and regularly updates the museum's materials into Finna. Sense's transaction-supporting Web Feature Service interface (WFS-T) enables the editing of spatial data of cultural environment objects with GIS spatial information system products. Profium continues to develop the Sense software in close cooperation with all collection management users, also taking into account the needs of various stakeholders. Collection management offers a unified and centralized cataloguing and storage solution for images, objects and cultural environment objects. Role-based rights management enables flexible cooperation between different parties. In addition, Sense's semantic capabilities guarantee the possibility of producing completely new services and experiences for museum customers.
